How Florida vehicle registration fees work
Florida vehicle registration costs consist of several layered fees. The annual registration fee is determined by your vehicle's weight class, ranging from $14.50 for vehicles under 2,500 lbs to $56.10 for vehicles over 8,000 lbs. When you first register a vehicle or transfer a title, you also owe the title certificate fee of $75.25, plus Florida's 6% sales tax and a county surtax.
The county surtax varies by where you live. Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough, and several other large counties charge 1% or more, while smaller counties often charge just 0.5%. All county surtaxes are capped at $5,000 per vehicle — so on a $100,000 purchase, you still only pay the capped amount.
Florida also charges a documentary stamp tax of $0.70 per $100 of purchase price. This is separate from sales tax and is sometimes overlooked by buyers. Our calculator includes this line item automatically.
New Florida residents must register their out-of-state vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. A $100 new resident fee applies in addition to all standard fees.
